A Guide for Your Child To Clean Their Bedroom (Plus Free Poster)

This post may seem like a no-brainer, but as a parent, I wish there was a quick guide I could send to my tween and teen when their bedroom was messy. A simple post that would give them a rundown of how to clean their room if they felt overwhelmed by the mess.

I asked my eldest daughter to help me write this post when she was about 12 years old (she’s 20 now), when she figured out the steps that helped her maintain a tidy room. I hope this quick guide is helpful for both parents and their kids to implement, inshallah.

Here’s what she wrote…

I know it can be difficult to keep your bedroom clean, but don't despair, dear friend; I have some tips to share!

Things to Remember

  • Having a clean home brings the malaikah (angels), and the malaikah bring nur (light) and sakeenah (tranquility).

  • When you find any task difficult, make dua and ask Allah swt to help your task become light. Allah SWT listens to our prayers!

  • Have confidence in yourself that you can do the job without getting distracted, and say bismillah (in the Name of Allah) before you start anything.

The 10 Easy Tips to Clean Your Bedroom

  1. Start in one corner of your room.

  2. Make piles of everything in your room, such as, for example:

    • A pile of clothes.

    • A pile of supplies.

    • A pile of books.

    • A pile of miscellaneous stuff that is lying around.

  3. Put all your supplies in your backpack, drawers, or on your shelves.

  4. Sort your clothes into a dirty pile and a clean pile.

  5. Throw your dirty pile of clothing in the laundry hamper.

  6. Fold or hang your clean pile of clothes and put it in your closet or drawers.

  7. Make up your bed and stack any pillows or decor.

  8. Now tackle your miscellaneous pile. Put away what you know, and ask your parent or older sibling to help decide where to put the rest.

  9. Dust and vacuum your room if needed.

  10. Look around your room and enjoy your hard efforts, alhumdulillah!

That's it, dear friend. It can be really simple, and you can definitely do it if I can, inshallah. To be honest, what our parents tell us to do is the right thing, but sometimes we don’t feel like doing it. However, when we do have a clean room, it feels amazing!

To avoid having a messy room again, it’s always better to put your things away after you’re done using them. When you take off your clothes, immediately put them either in your laundry hamper or closet to avoid having to go through a big clean-up situation again.

On another note, remember not to stuff anything under your bed, eat in your room, or leave dirty dishes. Besides being gross, you can't fool your mom because she knows all the tricks - don't ask me how I know this. ;-)
