The Joys and Benefits of Ramadan Journaling for You and Your Kids
Back in 2018, I was going through a very difficult season in my life. It was a time that pushed me to slow down and search for simpler, more intentional ways to study the Deen and connect with the Qur’an, especially during Ramadan. I felt the need to organize my thoughts, emotions, and intentions in a way that would bring clarity instead of overwhelm.
One of the tools that helped me immensely during that time was journaling.
When I began searching for Ramadan or Islamic journals, I realized that there were very few options available, and those options were complicated and expensive. I wanted something comprehensive yet simple, something that would help with reflection, goals, accountability, and planning, all while staying rooted in faith.
So one day I decided to design my own Ramadan journal pages on my computer. I printed, cut, and pasted them into a simple notebook. I’ve always been that planner-using woman who buys a new planner every year and writes monthly goals, weekly intentions, and daily reminders. Organization has always been one of the ways I manage my life and the many responsibilities Allah has placed in my care.
Ramadan is always a particularly busy time for us moms. Trying to keep ourselves spiritually focused while also guiding our children through the month can be challenging. That’s when the thought occurred to me: Why don’t I make Ramadan journals for my kids, too?
I wanted something that would help them understand Ramadan beyond food and fasting, something that would encourage reflection, gratitude, and awareness of their relationship with Allah SWT.
When I shared my ideas with a few friends, they loved them and asked for copies for their children. At that point, I felt embarrassed handing out my rough designs, so I decided to create something more polished and intentional. I researched how to self-publish, and from there, one thing led to another.
I began designing journals not just for Ramadan but for different areas of my life as a Muslima. I quickly realized how much this method of journaling and tracking was helping me stay consistent with my spiritual goals. It gave structure to my intentions and helped me remain mindful during busy days.
As for the Ramadan Journal, I eventually designed two versions: one for adults and teens and another for children. Each was created with the goal of making Ramadan more productive, meaningful, and age-appropriate.
What Prompts are Inside the Ramadan Journal
The adult and teen journal is designed to encourage daily reflection and accountability without being overwhelming. It includes:
A personalization page
Qur’an or Hadith inspiration for each day of Ramadan
Daily Ramadan reflections
Mood tracking
Salah logging
Deeds and Sunnah tracking
A daily fasting self-check based on:
Health
Attitude
Ibadah
Actions
Deeds
Guided journaling prompts, such as:
My Ramadan struggle today
My Ramadan goal for tomorrow
These sections help bring awareness to both the spiritual and emotional sides of fasting, which is something we often overlook. These are the same prompts I eventually gathered into the Ramadan Journal I made, but they can just as easily be written in a simple notebook.
Why I Think Ramadan Journaling is Beneficial
Keeping a Ramadan journal, whether for yourself or your children, can be deeply rewarding. Some of the benefits include:
Increased mindfulness and self-reflection
Writing allows you to pause, think, and assess your spiritual state instead of rushing through the days.Tracking progress
Journaling helps you notice growth in your ibadah, habits, character, and emotional well-being throughout the month.Cultivating gratitude
Recording blessings, even small ones, nurtures contentment and appreciation for what Allah has given us.Boosting motivation
When goals and intentions are written down, they feel more real and are easier to follow through on.Preserving memories
A Ramadan journal becomes a keepsake of something to look back on and reflect upon in years to come.Encouraging consistency
Seeing daily efforts written down reminds you that small actions matter and encourages you to keep going.
Journaling With Children
For children, journaling does not need to be complicated. A kid-friendly Ramadan journal like the one I made for my kids or one you design with your own ideas can help them express their feelings, recognize their efforts, and feel proud of what they are accomplishing. It also opens the door for meaningful conversations and gentle guidance.
Most importantly, journaling teaches both adults and children that Ramadan is not about perfection but about awareness, effort, and sincerity.
Ramadan journaling has been a blessing in my life. It has helped me slow down, stay intentional, and make the most of this sacred month—one page and one reflection at a time. Even if it’s just a few lines a day in a notebook, the habit itself can be deeply grounding.
